The Hillside Community Information

The Anchorage "hillside" is probably one of the most loosely defined areas of town.  Its location depends on who you ask.  In the past, it described rural property on lots, maybe ½ acre or greater, served by well and septic, and located from Abbott Road south with a weaving western boundary past Rabbit Creek Road.

As developers completed new subdivisions, the hillside definition changed. Because it was a desirable location, every builder and developer wanted his subdivision described as hillside property.  Now we hear lower hillside and upper hillside.

So the character of the hillside changed.  Subdivisions such as Kempton Hills, Turnagain View, Huffman Hills, Tamaron, just to name a few, brand themselves as being on the "lower" hillside.  By the same token, Goldenview and Prominence Point, are now considered on the upper hillside.  While some are on larger (1/2 acre or more) lots, all property can be considered quite urban, and are on public water and sewer. 

Now there was something for everyone.  Now the hillside wasn´t necessarily rural, and homeowners didn´t have to feel "rural" property with well and septic systems. 

Then there´s Stuckagain Heights.  Stuckagain Heights meets the hillside criteria:  property on larger lots.  But, it´s only accessible from Tudor Road, where the rest of the hillside area is accessible from Hillside Road, or Seward Highway.

While not a "world class" ski area, the Hilltop Ski Area is a favorite with local kids thanks to its close location and special designated area for snowboarders.
