Girdwood Real Estate

Girdwood Community InformationPresently, Girdwood real estate is comprised of a wonderfully diverse population made up of local businesses, Anchorage commuters, services and, of course, the ever-present outdoor enthusiasts. Girdwood has so much to offer its residents and visitors throughout the year, with its B&B's, boutiques, bars, shops and a post office. It's easy to see why Girdwood real estate is so appealing. Originally known as Glacier City, the community of Girdwood had its foundations in the gold mining industry at the beginning of the 20th century. The town was named for James Girdwood, a linen merchant from Ireland that had four of Crow Creek's gold claims.

Beginning in 1915, development in Girdwood real estate was spurred on by the Federal government's construction of railroads in the area. The little town boomed with new businesses. Mining continued until the president closed them down in the late 1930s, causing the city to nearly become a ghost town. In 1949, construction of the Seward Highway that connected Seward, Eagle River and Anchorage again brought an influx of people to Girdwood real estate. The Alyeska Ski Corporation was formed in 1954, which, in turn, helped create a first-class ski resort in the Girdwood area.
A 9.2 magnitude earthquake hit Girdwood in 1964, dropping the Turnagain Arm coastline so dramatically, that the whole town had to move approximately 2 1/2 miles away to where it now stands. Alaska Airlines bought the resort three years later. The Nugget Inn was eventually constructed. The old chair lifts were replaced by a fixed quad, a 60 passenger tram and a high-speed quad chair in 1980, when Seibu Corporation bought the resort. The 307 room, luxury Westin Alyeska Prince Hotel opened its doors in August 1994 with a facility on the top of the mountain that featured fine dining and a skier's cafeteria.
